UPDATE!!
Dog Lovers with big hearts
have stepped forward to adopt
Miss Dixie, 13 year old ACTIVE female Australian Shepherd
UPDATE: It appears that Dixie has found her forever home!
Someone was forwarded the email I sent out a couple of weeks ago and then
contacted me about Dixie. When we spoke, I asked if they were aware
that she was 13 years old. When the response I heard was, "We don't
care about that.", I knew I had found someone special. I went on to
explain about the supposed biting incident, and I heard what I myself had
said several times, Dixie has been taken from the only thing she knew for
13 years and needs someone to love her so that she can trust again.
There was no doubt in my mind at this point, I had stumbled upon someone
very special.
After receiving glowing recommendations from the new family's vet,
personal reference, and home check, Dixie is now in her new home.
Upon meeting her new family, she went to them immediately and was
encircled by the family. It truly touched me when this happened; I
knew then, this was meant to be.
Dixie and I had some time together, before meeting her new family. I
leaned down to love her, and I got the best gift in the world; a little
kiss on my chin. I do believe that Dixie knew this was a special
day.
Please keep Dixie and her new family in your thoughts and prayers as she
and the family work through the next few weeks. I believe that Dixie
and her sister were neglected for a very, very long time, and this might
not be the easiest transition for her. I also believe that this
family is committed to helping Dixie through this, and will love and
cherish her for the rest of her days.
SPECIAL THANKS TO ALL WHO FORWARDED EMAILS
AND SPREAD THE WORD ABOUT THIS SPECIAL DOG!
Dixie is a small Aussie, weighing only 39 pounds. She is blue merle, with
a lot of white on her. She is in excellent health for a 13 year old and is
very active. She has a cataract in one eye, had one tooth pulled in June,
but her teeth are in good shape. She is spayed, up-to-date on all shots,
and was given the 6 month heartworm prevention shot (due December 4,
2003). She had been so flea infested before she came into the vets,
that she had to be on meds for 6 weeks, rather than the typical 10 days.
She should be finished with her meds now.
Dixie's owner has
terminal cancer and is unable to care for Dixie. No one else in the family
wanted to take Dixie or the other Australian Shepherd, whom Aussie Rescue
took.
Dixie was placed in a nursing home following the Eden Alternative, but
that did not work out. She was allowed full run of the place with no
leadership or guidance.
She needs a dog savvy owner, who will provide leadership in order to help
Dixie understand her place in the home. Would be a great companion for
more settled couple, but must be steady on feet, as she is VERY active,
and
loves to talk. She will break your heart, always looking for something
familiar; she needs lots of love. I do not know how she will do around
children and would be cautious about placing her in a home with small
children who live there full time.
Dixie was great with the other dog, two bunnies, and birds at the nursing
home, and she will probably be fine with cats. She lived with another
Aussie before coming to rescue, and supposedly also lived with cats. She
had no problems at the nursing home with living inside and appears to be
housebroken. Dixie also walks beautifully on lead.
If Dixie has not been
adopted within the next two weeks, by July 31, 2003, she will have to be put to sleep.
She's
been boarded two months out of the last 2.5 months and this is not fair to
Dixie. She's a great dog who deserves a home of her own. If you know
anyone with a heart large enough to take in this young lady in an old
dog's suit, please have them send me an email at
therapyk9s@aol.com.
Home check, references, and contract required.
Adoption fee includes spay, current shots, 6 month heartworm prevention
(due December 4, 2003), teeth cleaning. $50.
She is
located in the Jackson, Mississippi area.
PLEASE only serious inquiries!
